Protern is a cloud based system. It is accessible anywhere you have an internet connection. To access Protern's analysis software you will need a Protern Pass. This lets you upload sensor data, analyze your runs, and track your data over time.
If you are coach for a team, please fill out the form on our Alpine Teams page as we have special packages for teams. A coach will need a subscription to see their athlete's data. A coach doesn't need a sensor, although it can be helpful to have a spare.
When you get a Protern Pass, you're getting a system that is constantly improving. Unlike traditional timing systems which don't get any better over time, our team is regularly adding new metrics and features to help you get faster.
Protern is great for figuring out what is the best line, but no matter how accurate the sensor you can't just rely on the GPS track - you'll need to look at the video. Protern will tell you which line was fastest, and video will fill in the details such as body position, specific line, edge activation, etc.
When you make a quantriq (how you define a run in Protern), the first split you create is the start and the last one will be the finish. You have the option to make the split a "moving start", which means the timer starts when the skier crosses that split. Another option is to set a "standing start", where Protern will look for the moment the skier started moving and set the timer to start then.
In general the Protern Sensor is accurate enough that you can see where the start and finish is on the course based on the route the skier takes. It is also really easy to adjust your splits if you want refine their position.
